Cabo San Lucas

El Arco, Cabo San Lucas, MexicoToday Los Cabos is the primary tourist destination of southern Baja, and it is growing in leaps and bounds. Development continues at a fast pace and there are now many gorgeous, sophisticated resorts and hotels all along the coast from Cabo San Lucas to San José del Cabo. Luxury villas are also being built tastefully into the hillsides, created a very elegant and dramatic atmosphere. There are estimated to be up to 50,000 people in the area during the busy tourist season, although the permanent population is about half of this number.

There were only 400 people living in Cabo San Lucas around the 1930s. It was just a little sleepy fishing village. However, it did have its own cannery and many came to sportfish in the postwar period. They nicknamed it ‘Marlin Alley.’ Eventually the population began to grow as sportfishers, anglers and luxury boaters flocked to the area. In 1973 the Transpeninsular Highway was finished. Today this stretch of highway between Los Cabos and San José is known as ‘The Corridor’. Soon after an international airport was constructed in San José del Cabo. This opened the door for a great tourist market.

Los Cabos has a lot to offer tourists and residents alike. Countless numbers of fantastic gourmet restaurants of all types are popping up everywhere. It is the undisputed center of nightlife in sourthern Baja. Also one can enjoy great shopping, golf, boating, fishing and wonderful beaches! Prices of real estate are higher than anywhere else in Mexico, and many wealthy people are now building their homes in the area. Cabo San Lucas really has become very much an American tourist town.

About 45 minutes drive north of Cabo San Lucas is Todos Santos. It used to be primarily known as an artists colony, but now it has been discovered and more people are moving here as it has a very pleasant, slightly cooler climate all year around.
